Who We Are

The Congregation of the Good Shepherd is an active spiritual community for expatriate Christians in Beijing, China. Our mission statement is a line taken from a hymn: “Christ for the world we sing, the world to Christ we bring.”

Our Vision

Our vision is to be a vibrant, growing congregation which provides opportunities to strengthen Christian discipleship, individually and in community, to further Christ’s kingdom here on earth. We strive to value diversity, especially regarding denominational backgrounds, socioeconomic status, gender, orientation, language, and ethnicity. We hold fast to the essentials of the Christian faith as expressed in the historic creeds, and we seek to worship God, become ever more like Jesus, and live in the power of the Holy Spirit. We aim to build bridges in the wider international church community of Beijing and to proclaim the love of Christ.

What We Believe

We are a diverse Christian worshiping community rooted in the Christian faith as found in the Holy Scriptures and summarized in the historic creeds.  We use the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed as statements of our core Christian beliefs.

Our Core Values

We are God-Centered—God is the source of our strength and being.  We center our church life around the one true God, who has revealed himself in Scripture to be Father, Son, and Spirit.  Our liturgical worship services place God as the focal point of our prayers, songs of worship, preaching, and Communion.

We are Ecumenical—we bring together people from many different Christian denominations and traditions.  We take a “big tent” approach to things like Christian doctrine and church practices, holding to the essentials and learning from each other in our differences.

We value Diversity—we are multicultural and multi-ethnic in our community members, in our worship expressions, and in the life of our church.  We value unity and fellowship in our community, breaking through the barriers that usually divide people: things like socioeconomic status, race, gender, age, marital status, etc.

We value service and justice—we serve and love others in various ways, all with a view to advance the kingdom of God.  Through obedience to the Gospel of Jesus Christ we seek to bring justice, mercy, and love to our neighbors and to our world.

We value discipleship—in all things we as individuals and as a community seek to become more and more like Jesus Christ in our characters, our values, our devotion to God, and our relationships.
